MPOB, established on 1 May 2020, is a government agency responsible for the development of the oil palm industry in Malaysia. Its main role is to promote and develop national objectives, policies and priorities for the well-being of the Malaysian oil palm industry.
To drive the industry forward, MPOB focuses on research and development along the entire value spectrum of the oil palm industry. It embraces a 3-pronged strategy to maximise synergies between economic development, environmental stewardship, and value addition to ensure that future growth is carried out within a sustainable framework.
MPOB engages in cutting-edge science and innovative technologies and over the years has won many awards, both local and international. It plays a pivotal role in promoting industry excellence that resonates with its mission – to enhance the well-being of the Malaysian oil palm industry through research, development and excellent services.
To date, MPOB has successfully developed 712 technologies covering all sectors in the oil palm industry including innovations in the production of food and non-food products to be adopted and commercialised. About 32.7 per cent of these technologies have been commercialised and adopted by local industries and entrepreneurs.
Recently, the Advanced Biotechnology and Breeding Centre (ABBC), under MPOB has been selected as the recipient of the Mahathir Science Award 2022, a global Malaysian award. ABBC won the Award in the Tropical Natural Resources category in recognition of its far-sighted research programme in using palm germplasm which has become an important resource in driving the socioeconomic value of the oil palm industry at the national and global levels.
ABBC is now the largest oil palm germplasm collection centre in the world for conservation and research based on oil palm breeding and biotechnology. ABBC is the third Malaysian recipient of the Mahathir Science Award in its 17-year history.
