KUALA LUMPUR, 14 Dec 14 2022 — Cumulative exports of non-glove latex products up to the third quarter (Q3) of 2022 rose 0.16 percent to RM6.88 billion compared to RM6.87 billion in 2021, said the Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) today.
However, MRC said the exports of glove latex products declined to RM21.86 billion compared to RM52.204 billion a year ago.
According to the MRC, the development of non-glove latex products continued to have a positive effect on the broader rubber products sector, expanding 39.4 percent in the third quarter of 2022 to RM1.81 billion versus RM1.30 billion a year ago.
In a statement, MRC said that examples of non-glove latex products include foam products, latex thread, catheters, condoms and rubber toys. MRC said rubber toys saw the biggest growth in the third quarter, rising 155 percent to RM83.6 million from RM32.8 million a year ago.
Meanwhile, foam products increased 153.5 per cent to RM274.3 million in Q3 2022 versus RM108.2 million a year ago, it said.
“Our operational outcomes have been extremely positive. This was anticipated by the rise in exports of general and industrial rubber goods to the Philippines, the United States, Australia, and Singapore in the third quarter. In order to strengthen and maintain this positive trend, they will focus on foam products to drive growth,” said MRC’s chief executive officer Nor Hizwan Ahmad.
MRC said various initiatives were launched in 2022 to help elevate the local rubber industry and to raise the bar for rubber products globally.
It facilitated cooperation between Green Space Industries, Cranfield University, and Levidian Nanosystem Ltd in Bedford, United Kingdom in September. MRC plans to raise the calibre and prestige of Malaysian rubber goods with the discovery of graphene which can now be produced from methane.
“As a result of our ability to create such a valuable composite and combine it with natural rubber to create an extremely robust and sustainable aerospace balloon, more doors will open up for us,” Nor Hizwan said.
Additionally, in November 2022, MRC and several Malaysian companies participated in one of the world’s largest medical trade shows, MEDICA in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Since its founding more than 40 years ago, the event draws research and business professionals from around the world, along with experts and decision-makers, it said.
MRC also co-organised the TARGET Programme for rubber smallholders with the Malaysian Rubber Board to improve their livelihoods. It gave donations worth about RM26,000 to smallholders in Kuantan, Pahang.
Meanwhile, as for the ongoing Global Fund for Rubber Innovation (GFRI), 86 researchers have registered interest to submit their research projects, MRC added.
